My name is Lourens Human and I am 63 years of age. I have a wife and three children, and we have two dogs, Cinnamon and Pepper.

I worked as a Counselling Psychologist in South Africa from 1996 to 2017. In 2017, my family and I migrated to Australia where I have been working as a Counsellor from 2018 to 2026.

South Africa:

I completed my BA (Hons)(Psychology)(1991), MA (Counselling Psychology)(1996), MA (Industrial Psychology) (2003) and my PhD (Psychology)(2005) in South Africa. I registered as a Counselling Psychologist in 1996 with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).

From 1996 to 2017, I worked on a full-time basis at the University of Pretoria in the Department of Psychology. Here I fulfilled various roles. As a lecturer I was responsible for teaching psychology at an undergraduate level. On a postgraduate psychology level, I was the Coordinator of the MA (Counselling Psychology) program, and also responsible for teaching career psychology, counselling psychology and sport psychology. I was also a practical training facilitator and clinical supervisor for postgraduate counselling psychology students. As I researcher I also conducted research in the areas of career psychology, counselling psychology and sport psychology, and was a research supervisor for MA (Counselling Psychology) and PhD (Psychology) students.

Besides working as a lecturer and researcher at the University of Pretoria, I was a practitioner with a part-time practice focussing on career psychology, counselling psychology and sport psychology.

Australia:

As mentioned previously, my family and I migrated to Australia in 2017. In 2018, I registered with the Australian Counselling Association as a Counsellor (Level 4). From 2018 to 2019, I was involved in delivering therapeutic counselling services at a retreat in Victoria to people who had experienced severe trauma (e.g., Veterans). Since 2020, I have been facilitating therapeutic counselling with people who have had traumatic experiences due to being victims of a crime in South Australia, such homicides, sexual assault, domestic violence and child sexual abuse.

Online counseling, also known as teletherapy, is a method of delivering mental health services through digital means such as video conferencing, phone calls, or messaging platforms. It can be an ideal option for individuals who have difficulty accessing traditional therapy due to geographical distance, time constraints, or personal preferences like privacy and comfort. Many people find it easier to open up from the familiarity of their own space.

Teletherapy has been found to be highly effective, with studies showing that it can produce similar outcomes to in-person therapy, particularly for issues like anxiety, depression, and PTSD. The flexibility and accessibility it offers make it a valuable alternative to conventional therapy settings.
